Three Small Ways to Save Big from Water Usage on Your Home Utility Costs

Water usage impacts more than just your water bill. It also impacts your energy bill from the use of hot water. Did you know that according to the EPA residential water heating accounts for around 18% of total home energy use? Only heating and cooling with the HVAC unit uses more energy.

At Kenco Home Inspections, we’re invested in helping our clients run your homes better. We have the knowledge and experience to understand the inner workings of your home. Here are three simple steps you can take to reduce your home energy and water usage to save on your utility bills.

1. Convert to a Tankless Water Heater

Converting to a tankless water heater can reap savings up to 50% on your utility bills. It works by using high-powered burners to quickly heat water only when you turn the hot water on instead of a pilot light that must keep reheating the water in the tank after it cools down.

In addition to saving energy, tankless water heaters last longer. Conventional storage water heaters last around 10 years whereas tankless water heaters last up to 20 years. While the initial cost of a tankless water heater is higher, you save money in the long run. Plus, they are better for the environment.

2. Check for Leaky Pipes Regularly

Leaky pipes in homes waste around 10,000 gallons of water per year per home. However, fixing leaky pipes can save 10% on your water bill. Don’t flush your money down the drain. Check for leaks in your home regularly.

Do you hear water constantly running in your toilet? Or, do you see moisture around your hot water heater? These and other common leaks are easy to repair when you take the time to notice them. It’s worth the effort to save money and the risks of water damage.

3. Upgrade Your Irrigation System

The outdoor irrigation system is commonly a source of undetected underground leaks. If you’ve noticed an unexplained surge in your water bill, walk through your yard with an eye for damp or low spots. These are a sign of a leak.

Also, consider updating your irrigation system to a WaterSense® microirrigation system. These systems use up to 50% less water than a conventional irrigation system. Outdoor water usage accounts for between 30% and 50% of total home water usage. Investing in a more water efficient system saves a ton of money on utility costs.
