Keep Your Home’s Pool Safe with Child Safety Tips

Living in Florida has many advantages. One of those is the nice weather we enjoy year-round. That beautiful weather also means that many homes have a pool. 

Pools are a great way to cool off and enjoy being outside. However, they can pose a threat to the safety of children if not correctly managed. That is especially true when children are small and cannot swim. 

There are some easy things you can do to keep the children around you safe. That can include your own kids as well as curious children in the neighborhood that might wander onto your property. Here is a list of some easy steps to keep your pool safe for kids:

1.     Never Leave Children Unattended

You should always watch children when they are in or near water. They should never be unattended, even if they can swim. At least one adult should make it their task to supervise children when they are around the pool. 

A lot of accidents can happen very quickly. Those accidents could include drowning, slipping, hitting their head and more. That is why an adult should always pay close attention to children around a pool.

2.     Teach Them How to Swim

Swimming is an essential life skill. Try to teach your children how to swim at an early age and get them comfortable around water. Knowing how to swim could save their life.

Being able to swim makes the pool time more enjoyable for everyone. The kids have more fun and you might be able to relax a little around the pool. Knowing how to swim increases the fun and safety.

3.     Have Drain Covers in Place

Make children aware of drains and suction outlets. They need to know where they are located and that they need to stay away from them. Be sure to check regularly that drain covers are in place and intact. 

Drain covers need to be compliant and should not be loose or broken. Children’s hair, bathing suits or even limbs could get stuck in the powerful suction if the drain covers are missing.

4.     Install Barriers, Covers and Alarms

To keep wandering and curious children away from pools you should install barriers like fences. They should be at least four feet high and surround the pool. The fence should have a self-latching gate as the only access point to the pool.

A pool cover is also a great safety feature. Additionally, consider installing an alarm that would alert you to movement around the pool. That could be a door alarm or other motion detectors. 

5.     Know CPR

It is always a good idea to know how to perform CPR. It becomes even more important if you own a pool. Quick reaction is vital when trying to save a drowning victim. Knowing CPR offers peace of mind as a parent and pool owner.
