Spring Is In the Air! Six Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Millions of people in the United States suffer from seasonal allergies. Higher pollen counts lead to hay fever during the spring, which causes sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, coughing, and other symptoms. While the CDC recommends staying indoors with windows closed to reduce seasonal allergy symptoms, the EPA identifies that indoor air quality is worse than outdoor air quality.

Tips to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Keep your home a safe haven from allergies by improving your indoor air quality this spring. We have a few strategies to help your family breathe easier.

1.     Change the HVAC Air Filters – Air filters clean dust, allergens, and debris from the air before it enters your home through your heating or air conditioning system. A dirty air filter doesn’t clean the air and reduces energy efficiency. Manufacturers recommend changing air filters every one to three months. For best results, change air filters more frequently during allergy season.

2.     Use Air Purifiers – In-room air purifiers help clean pollen and other allergens from the air. Plus, air purifiers also remove bacteria and other germs that can make your family sick. Consider using an air purifier in each bedroom and the main living space.

3.     Remove Indoor Plants – Houseplants can foster mold growth and trigger allergies. For individuals with asthma or sensitive to allergens, houseplants can cause problems. While plants can clean the air, the positive impact probably doesn’t outweigh the risks.

4.     Clean Your House – Dust and dirt collect on all surfaces in a home. The dust and dirt buildup lead to decreased air quality when not regularly cleaned. Schedule time for the routine cleaning task. Dust, vacuum, clean blinds, and wash linens. Consider cleaning more frequently during spring allergy season.

5.     Clean Vents – The dirt and debris on and in your vents enter your home’s air when your HVAC runs. Schedule a professional air duct cleaning service for a deeper clean. Also, you can remove the vent registers and clean them out using a vacuum. Wipe the surface of the vent clean with a damp rag to remove surface dust.

6.     Schedule HVAC Service – Annual HVAC preventative maintenance includes inspecting and cleaning your unit. Plus, the technician recommends repairs or replacement of worn parts. A well-working HVAC system keeps the air cleaner and runs more efficiently.
