Planning Your Holidays During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The 2020 holiday season, much like the rest of the year, might feel a little different from other years. However, it’s important to find ways to connect while adjusting and keeping a safe distance, especially with older friends and relatives.

You can still enjoy a time of celebration with a little creativity and planning. Don’t let COVID-19 keep you from experiencing and showing holiday cheer.

Ideas for COVID-19 Holiday Planning

Make new traditions and tweak the old ones to create special holiday moments. Many people have also experienced loneliness and financial hardships this year. As you celebrate think about how you can share the true spirit of the holidays by helping others.

Stick to Small Gatherings

The CDC recommends avoiding large gatherings this holiday season to stop the spread of the virus. In fact, the CDC advises to only gather in-person with members of your household. If you do plan to see people outside of your immediate household, wear a mask, wash or sanitize hands frequently and social distance.

Celebrate with Holiday Lights

Bring holiday cheer to the entire neighborhood by hanging holiday lights and décor. Follow your neighborhood regulations when decorating outside. Use LED lights for increased energy efficiency and follow smart ladder safety guidelines.

Order and Ship Gifts Early

Due to higher shipping volumes, some packages are taking longer to reach their destination. Plus, with more people ordering online, some hard-to-find items may become even more scarce closer to Christmas. Don’t wait until the last minute to start your holiday shopping.

Connect on a Video Chat

We’ve all learned to use Zoom and other video conferencing technology this year. Put that new knowledge to good use this holiday season. Schedule time with family and friends online to connect. Get creative. Plan a menu ahead of time and enjoy a special holiday treat together, like hot chocolate or cookies with grandparents. Or, plan to open mailed gifts together online. You can enjoy special holiday moments from a distance.

Make it Special for the Children

You don’t have to buy tons of expensive gifts to make the holidays special for kids. Create a countdown to Christmas with daily activities. These may include acts of service, like taking food to a community food pantry or donating a toy to a child in need. Also, add activities to help them connect, like writing a thank you note to a teacher or drawing a picture for a grandparent. Don’t forget the fun! Watch a holiday movie together, take a walk after dark to look at lights or start a fun new holiday tradition.
