Do you know if you have a radon problem in your home? Do you have a radon mitigation system in place? These are important questions to ask before buying or selling a house. Often, real estate transactions require radon testing.

Radon is not properly detectable without a certified test. Before you sell or buy a home, have your home or the home you are thinking of buying tested. Plus, it will give you peace of mind that the home you plan to purchase is safe for you and your family.

What is Radon and Why is it a Problem?

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas, which makes it hard to detect without specifically testing for it. It is produced by decaying uranium and is found in a most soil, rock and water. Therefore, it can be detected in many homes across the United States. The gas is usually present in the air but normally in very low levels.

Problems occur when the gas gets trapped in your home. The gas enters buildings through the soil, usually through pores in the concrete in walls and floors. It does not matter how old your house is but how it interacts with the surrounding soil.

If you are exposed to elevated radon levels over an extended period of time, it can cause lung cancer. The good news is, that once you know that the radon levels in your home are elevated, you can take steps to change that. There are radon reduction methods and mitigation systems that can be installed to reduce the gas levels and make your home safe to live in.

What Does Kenco’s Radon Testing Involve?

Kenco has a team of licensed Radon Technicians that can quickly provide you with accurate radon testing. Our staff uses RADALINK Aircat monitors that can easily be placed in homes, are silent and have great safety features. They are tamper-resistant and offer fast and accurate results.

The radon testing process is rather straightforward and uncomplicated. During the test all windows and exterior doors have to be kept closed, except when you need to enter or leave your home. The thermostats should be set for between 67 and 77 degrees, with the heating or AC systems operating normally. Whole-house fans, fireplaces and wood stoves should not be used during the radon test.

The test takes a minimum of 48 hours with closed house conditions being implemented before the test starts. After the test is conducted, the results are available quickly and will be sent to you via email. RADALINK will be able to answer any questions you may have and help you understand the data. Of course, we are here to help as well.

Radon testing is quick, easy and very important. Whether you are thinking of selling your home or buying a new one, this should be part of your process, along with a home inspection. Do not wait. Call today to schedule radon testing with Kenco Home Inspections!
