6 Easy Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill
Now more than ever, homeowners are looking for ways to save money. One great way to reduce your monthly expenses is by lowering your energy costs. According to the EPA, half of all home energy usage goes to heating or cooling the home. The main way to reduce energy expenses is to focus on maximizing your HVAC system’s performance.
Ways to Save on Energy Costs
As home inspectors, we often see inefficiencies in the homes we inspect. These not only lead to higher energy costs, but can impact the maintenance and value of your home over time. Focus on easy changes that can improve your home’s comfort.
1. Install a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat allows you to customize the desired temperature settings for your home. For example, you can set the temperature so your unit runs less frequently when you aren’t at home or are sleeping. Smart thermostats even allow you to control the temperature remotely using your smart device.
2. Add Attic Insulation
Over time, attic insultation settles reducing its effectiveness. This allows unwanted heat transfer through the roof. When you lose air through the roof, your HVAC unit must work harder to maintain the temperature in your home. It’s easy to add new attic insulation, especially blown-in fiberglass insulation.
3. Replace the HVAC Air Filter
For your HVAC unit to work most efficiently, change the air filter every one to three months. A clean air filter allows your unit to more easier push air into your home. For homes with pets, smokers or individuals suffering from allergies or asthma, change the air filter monthly to also maintain air quality.
4. Lower the Water Heater Temperature
According to the EPA, reducing the temperature setting on your water heater can produce between 4% and 22% annual energy savings. Many manufactures set the thermostat at 140 degrees, while a temperature of 120 degrees provides adequate hot water. Plus, 120 degrees is a much safer temperature to avoid scalding.
5. Check for Air Leaks in Windows and Doors
Air leaks account for a large amount of lost energy in homes. To check for air leaks, place a sheet of paper in front of the window or door. If the paper moves, you have an air leak. Air leaks are easy and affordable to fix by installing whetherstripping.
6. Replace Incandescent Light Bulbs
LED light bulbs use up to 70% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. While LED light bulbs cost more to purchase, they pay for themselves quickly. One of the easiest and best ways to reduce energy usage in your home is by changing out old incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs.
